Writing Program Launches AI Resources Canvas Site

November 1, 2023

Professors in the Northwestern Cook Family Writing Program have designed a canvas course site to help students and instructors utilize generative AI. This site contains modules for various audiences that provide resources for how and when to use AI for their writing. The modules include resources for Design Thinking & Communication, First-Year Writing Seminars, The Writing Place, and Writing and Speaking in Business.

Elizabeth Lenaghan, Director of the Cook Family Writing Program, states the following about the site, “We thought that, even though some of the materials we created are very specific to courses only the Writing Program teaches, much of what was there would be more broadly applicable and helpful for teachers and writers thinking about how to incorporate (and not) AI instruction into their courses.” Example materials include, brainstorming, research, creating a thesis, creating syllabus statements, and more.

Lenaghan goes on to say, “We hope that instructors will come away with a better idea of how to address AI use in their own teaching. We also hope that writers will consider our advice about when they might (and might) not use AI tools to make more thoughtful decisions.”
