Spring 2024 Topic: Science, Medical, and Health Writing
Taught by Laura Pigozzi
This is an interesting course for students interested in exploring the humanities side of science, health, and medicine. The course explores these topics in four modules: Rhetoric of Health and Medicine, Science Writing, Medical Writing, and Narrative in Medicine. Each module will have an expert guest speaker and assignments that explore each topic in different ways.
At the end of the course, students will:
- Understand how science and medicine is rhetorical and how knowledge is constructed
- Understand and be able to author different genres found in medical and health writing.
- Define “rhetoric” and understand how rhetorical choices construct meaning
- Define and apply rhetorical analysis to medical and health writing
- Understand the importance of audience and be able to localize text or media for a particular audience
- Understand and demonstrate writing as a process; as a process that creates knowledge, by revising and editing, by writing for different audiences and genres
- Practice reflection on writing to become more conscious, deliberate writers
Summer 2024 Topic: Legal Writing
Taught by Michele Zugnoni
This course emphasizes writing and speaking to inform and persuade audiences in legal contexts. The course is designed to help you think strategically about communication and produce documents and presentations that are well-organized, clear, and compelling. You will develop skills in writing processes, analytical reasoning, audience and purpose, scope and stance, collaboration, and public speaking.
At the end of this course, students will:
- Develop skills in writing processes, analytical Reasoning, legal reasoning, audience and purpose, scope and stance, collaboration, and public speaking.
- Have the opportunity to apply skills necessary for LSAT success to your legal writing assignments, thus deepening your understanding of legal writing and, should you wish, preparing yourself for the LSAT examination.
